KORA!KORA!KORA! CABARET VOLTAIRE VERSIONS - THE ALBUM |
| |

|
| |
Those who remember Sheffield United in the top half of the old Division One or Clockwork Orange the first time round will know the name, maybe experienced the sound or even have fallen under the spell of revolutionary post punks Cabaret Voltaire.
Kora! Kora! Kora! is not the new album by Cabaret Voltaire but a cut-up and clubbed-to-pieces collage of key cuts from the platinum-selling debut album by the Maori dub phenomenon called Kora. You'll have to wait a bit for proper new ground-shaking Cabaret Voltaire stuff. Richard H Kirk, the Cabaret Voltaire originator and mainstay has resurrected the name. Hallelujah!
Shiva Records is humbled to be able to exclusively announce that the seminal, electronic, art-rock experience from Sheffield known as Cabaret Voltaire is poised to inflict audio-visual carnage across designated areas of the world and its solar system once again.
There will be no pop records. No comeback rock gigs. No steel city tours. In fact... there will be no pop, just art.
All Disinformation is currently classified. But it appears that the UK population will need to head towards the London and Edinburgh regions next spring to catch the fireworks. Europe will see some bright lights in the fall but you country folks out in the US and Japan may have to wait until 2010 before the fan truly hits the shit.
The first physical sign of the return of the Audio Visual Avatar can be witnessed by all in January 2009 when Shiva Records release the first new work by Cabaret Voltaire since 1994, an incredible re-working of key tracks from the debut album by Kora, Shiva's awesome Platinum-selling, chart topping Kiwis... it's like Bob Marley & The Wailers meets... well, Cabaret Voltaire. |

Be scared people, be very scared. |
| |
Kora! Kora! Kora! is still quintessential Cabaret Voltaire…. Manipulating, cutting up, pasting, looping and creatively fucking with an original form. Perhaps not as alienated from popular culture now as they were back in the 1970's, CV remain innovators of musical experimentation and masters at the craft of etching something brand new from what exists.
The soulful vocals and funky electricity of Kora has been mined from their lustrous debut album and married by shotgun and evil preacher to a blizzard of industrial electronics, fucked up dub and factory funk. Early Howie B, old school Kraftwerk or an underground Depeche Mode, they still dodge a pigeonhole where they can.
This is the first new work from The Cabs in over a decade and it offers up a refreshing re-approach to the cutting edge retro sounds that glut the commercial radio and TV stations today. Their nod to the past exists through their production style and fondness for the Dada movement. Re-ordering cut up pieces of music into their own order and theme.
The musical collage lives on. Richard H Kirk, Cabaret Voltaire's originator , saw Kora live and seized an opportunity to apply the Cabaret Voltaire effect in amongst the dubby undertones. Present throughout, he re-works the mechanical, almost tribal drum, spacey keys and a sense of the hypnotic that popularized the purveyors of 'dark dance music'. They once commented that they desired to 'annoy as many people as possible'.
I'm not sure that's been achieved. Quite the contrary. But there's definitely a sit up and listen factor to the album and the overused 'it's a bit of grower' really does adhere here. Unraveling those layers takes time. Every new listen giving a different perspective.
Cabaret Voltaire have lined up select shows for 2009 – dates, content, format and locations tbc. It's going to be a bit special, that's guaranteed.
Cabaret Voltaire, for the record… Formed in 1974; signed with Rough Trade Records, 1978; released debut Extended Play EP, 1978; released the widely hailed albums The Voice Of America (1980) and Red Mecca (1981); released Hai!, a live album recorded in Japan, 1982; signed with Some Bizarre/Virgin Records, 1983; signed with Caroline Records, 1985; signed with EMI Manhattan Records, 1987; released trilogy: Plasticity, International Language, The Conversation, 1992-1994.

KORA
UK & Europe Tour November 2008 |
| |
|
"An infectiously feel good set" The Scotsman
Fresh from a whistle-stop tour of the UK this summer, New Zealand five-piece Kora return to Europe this November to do things even bigger and better than before. Having wowed crowds at sell-out shows and festival appearances at the likes of WOMAD, the mash-up maestros have firmly cemented their position as New Zealands hottest export.
Made up of four Maori brothers and their adopted musical sibling, Kora are currently destroying the charts in their homeland on a scale not seen since Fat Freddys Drop emerged. Hailing from Aotearoa, the four Kora brothers are Laughton on vocals, guitar and keys, Francis on bass and vocals, Stuart on guitar and vocals, and Brad on drums, alongside the only unrelated member Dan MacGruer on keys and bass.
Melding together influences from across the musical spectrum, including dub, funk, breakbeat, rock and blues, the band are renowned for their phenomenal live performances, oft described as The Prodigy meets Bob Marley and the Wailers, where solid vocal harmonies ride a powerhouse rhythm section, creating a sonic boom that can be heard as far away as Fiji.
Set to continue the ascent of NZ artists in Britains consciousness led by the phenomenally successful Salmonella Dub and Fat Freddys Drop, Kora will no doubt titillate anyone with any fondness for roots music, whether roots rock or roots reggae, or anyone with their finger on the pulse of dub innovation.
The band are now set to bring their inimitable ruckus back to the UK in November, stopping off for gigs in Germany, Denmark, Holland, Belgium and France en route.

Keep it quiet people but the brand new Crazy P album is almost
ready..... watch this space.
Glastonbury rocked, of course, and even the Radio 2 Stage at Guildfest
wobbled slightly. Then it was Ibiza for a day, Poland with Muse and the Beastie Boys and Bjork and then Croatia at the supersurreal Garden
Party. it's non-stop for the Crazy P.
The Big Chill will be awesome as ever. Crazy P will headline the Castle
Stage on Saturday 4th August, the Crazy P Soundsystem will also
throwdown the lowdown disco at the Finlandia Cocktail Tent on Sunday
before going on air for a couple of hours on Big Chill Radio in the
early hours of Monday. If that isn't enough, the band will be doing a
signing session in the Big Chill shop to boot... Phew!
After the Bloom Festival on August 11th, and a brief tour of Indonesia,
Crazy P will introduce their new album with a gig at London KOKO on
Thursday September 20th 2007. Put it in your diaries people.

Crazy P.... Hot News
The Sun rises in the East Midlands.
It rises with Nottingham's Crazy P on a high. The release of the acclaimed new album “A Night On Earth” has set in stone the worldwide reputation acquired via their first 3 albums, "A Nice Hot Bath With...", "The Wicked Is Music" and "24 Hour Psychedelic Freakout".
"A Night On Earth", the brand new Crazy P album, is an epic journey to the dark side of the funk, a coming of age album for a truly gifted group of young British musicians.
They kick it on Record and they kick it Live. Increasingly hailed as every hip housewife's favourite live act, the Crazy P 8-piece live troupe has crossed continents and cultures with missionary zeal. Live Highlights of 2005 were too numerous to mention with the band blitzing everywhere from Sydney to Moscow and back. Crazy P have just played to over 100,000 people in the UK as main support act on the Faithless arena tour and rocked every single show.
Now, with “A Night On Earth” featuring in Album Of The Year charts across the Dance Media, being featured everywhere from Celebrity Big Brother to Football on Five and picking up broadsheet acclaim to boot (“More hooks than a club cloakroom” The Guardian), Crazy P are set to go bang again with a summer of non-stop live action and the release in August of the new single "Can't Get Down" featuring Remixes by Ashley Beedle, Hot Toddy and Ron Basejam.
Premiered on Pete Tong's Essential Selection on Radio 1as part of Crazy P's recent live performance from the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios, the “Can't Get Down” release is going to be yet another heavy vinyl monster.
More Hot News. Crazy P have just been signed up for a worldwide TV and Cinema Commercial by Southern Comfort... The commercial, which features the band performing in Stockholm, begins transmission in the USA next week and will be on screens in the UK, Australia and South Africa in May.

Crazy P
A Night On Earth
(Shiva Records)
The follow up to last year's underground gem 24 Hour Psychedelic Freakout sees Crazy P dropping the 'enis' and turning in a set that makes our bosom swell with pride. Billed as a coming of age record, A Night On Earth looks set to romp home as THE 'feel good album of 2005'.
Fans of the band won't be surprised at the glossy fusion of house, disco and jazz; however their crystalline production value and song writing have been cranked up a gear. The dark, funk parable "Lady T" sounds off like a 21st Century Chic, whilst down tempo gem "A Night On Earth" and housed-up "Kicks" and "Sun-Science" see the boys at their uplifting best and with singer Danielle Moore in radiant fettle.
Ah yes... Danielle. She was first in line when they were handing out voices, dance moves and wardrobe. However, it is on stage that she morphs from sweet, soul vocalist into a strutting, superstar front woman. Galvanising the band's performance in to an incendiary party each time, it is she who makes them the hottest ticket on the live circuit at the moment.
Providing a perfect panacea for the glum rock epidemic, Crazy P have once again seduced us with a record of perennial beauty.

Album of the Month IDJ
CRAZY P
A NIGHT ON EARTH
Shiva Records (UK)
I have to admit that until this album landed on my desk last month, I’d more or less forgotten about Crazy Penis. While I rated both their 1999 debut album ‘A Nice Hot Bath With’ and 2002 follow-up ‘The Wicked Is Music’, I’d heard so little from them since that I didn’t even know whether they were still active.
Yet Crazy Penis were very much alive and kicking. While we in the UK were left wondering as to their whereabouts, thousands of miles away in Australia the Nottingham groovers were becoming the biggest sensation since the invention of the mullet. Unbeknownst to us, Jim Baron and Chris Todd’s new band were taking Aus by storm, playing to packed crowds of up to 9000 people a time. The quirky, genitalia-obsessed twosome had become a five-piece and were being treated like dance music royalty.
When this news eventually filtered through last month, it was initially difficult to take in. Crazy Penis always had the ideas and the talent to make it big, but they’d never quite got it together on vinyl. While the album that made them famous down under, ‘The Wicked Is Music’, was pretty good, it wasn’t that good. There must have been something we were missing. The answer arrived in the form of ‘A Night On Earth’, an album that goes some way to explaining Crazy Penis’ move from second-tier support act to dance music headliners. Quite simply, it is their best album by a long chalk. Whereas previous sets had shown moments of genius amongst the so-so instrumental filler, ‘A Night On Earth’ reeks of quality from start to finish. The production is tighter, the songs better, and the instrumentals groovier. There are more live instruments, fuller-sounding vocals and better ideas .It’s a fantastically fresh and funky listen.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about ‘A Night On Earth’ is the variety and quality – of the material on offer. Previously, Baron and Todd have rarely strayed from their successful formula of warm house grooves infused with a delicious disco-funk edge. This time round, they’ve tried their hand at ’80s soul (‘Turnaround’), jazzy P-funk (‘Lady T’), proggy downbeat grooves (‘Life Is My Friend’), glammy electropop (‘Can’t Get Down’), string-drenched melancholy (‘Sweet Feeling’) and straight-up, full-on electrofunk (the brilliant ‘Music Is My Love’). Such adventure could have resulted in embarassing failure, but every experiment hits the mark – and then some. There are, though, plenty of more ‘traditional’ Crazy Penis moments; the disco-funk thrust of ‘Bumcop’ (really), spangly hoe-down of ‘Cruising’ and Mylo-ish ‘In Deep’. These more familiar tracks work better when charismatic frontwoman Danielle Moore is at the mic, as on the upbeat ‘Kicks’. Moore excels herself on the album’s stand-out moment, the anthemic ‘Sun Science’ – a Big Chill/Carnival anthem in waiting of ever there was one. Just like ‘A Night On Earth’ is a future dance classic. Go seek – you won’t be disappointed.

Essential Album Mixmag
Not brand new but defintely brilliant. Is it too grown up? Nope, and everyone feels good about it. The single “Lady T” deserves to be a hit – it's a monster waiting to happen! But “Can't Get Down” is pure magic too. Good homegrown music that makes thenm stick out like a sore thumb. Expect to see them at all the major festivals next year!”

Album Of The Month Touch
Crazy Penis really have crafted a top quality album. It pulls no punches: right at the get-go there's the filthy futro-funk strut of “Lady T” which rolls with a rocking p-funkacidic riff. “Can't Get Down” also takes some juice from the Eighties with a great male vocal reminiscent of some of the classic synth groups of that era. Their downbeat grooves (think classic Madonna) moves up into house territory towards the end of the LP with some very well put together cuts and strong vocals. To sum up, this album's vibe makes you think sunshine, jazz ciagarettes and good times. Go find it. *****

Album of the Week DMC Update
CRAZY P
‘A NIGHT ON EARTH’
(SHIVA)
The once Crazy Penis, are now just plain old Crazy P and the name change seems to suit them if the follow-up to last year’s acclaimed ‘24 Hour Psychedelic Freakout’ is anything to go by. Another beautifully constructed soundscape of Balearic-kissed beats (‘Bumcop’ and ‘Cruising’), rolling dance grooves (‘Sun-Science’) and dreamy chilled numbers (‘Warm On The Inside’) sound more delicious with each successive play, yet again demonstrate why we’ve previously called them the most exciting band to emerge from the British dance scene since Massive Attack. The single, ‘Lady T’, with abstract lyrics and acid-etched beats is implausibly relaxed, while the ‘80s feel of ‘Music’s My Love’ and ‘Kicks’, grooving to Dannielle Moore’s lead, once more aptly highlight the Nottingham combo’s sharp production savvy and musical flare.

Album of the Month Blues & Soul
Essential Listening
Crazy Penis are back! Well, sort of… they’re back as Crazy P. And at last I can shout about it as I’ve been sitting on this long-player for the best part of six months! New album, new label, a lot has been happening for Chris Todd and Jim Baron since the days of Paper Recordings, the place that started it all for the CP boys. Crazy P’s only release last year was “24 Hour Psychedelic Freakout” on Shiva Records, a compilation that was sought far and wide, but now, they return with not only a new studio album, but their finest work to date. “A Night On Earth” (Shiva) will feature in many end of year charts, and it’s easy to see why. “Lady T”, the track that opens the album (and incidentally, the first to be lifted as a single) makes references to the Jackson 5 and Saturday Night Fever, all flawlessly sung. This is pure party stuff! And it sets the tone for a quite remarkable record. Chris and Jim have packed in their influences, drawing in elements of soul, jazz, funk, downtempo and house.
Tracks such as “Bumcop”, “Warm On The Inside”, “In Deep”, “Kicks” and “Cruising” just leave you with a stupid grin on your face and wanting to hit that ‘repeat’ button. This is ‘THE FEEL GOOD RECORD OF 2005’! Essential in every sense of the word. Don’t be a doofus and miss out on this one.

A Night on Earth
(Shiva)
Sometimes records have the ability to drag you back to a place that even though you remember vividly deep in your subconscious, you can’t quite remember how you got there, or how you got home. A Night on Earth takes you to that place. It is freely familiar and foreign all at once, bringing a funky disco-esque flava with progressive bass lines and synth rises. This truly is a memorable record and is easy to get into, over and over again. Offering refreshing and exciting ranges of tracks, Crazy P have certainly made a record to which you will get off your seasonally depressed ass and get down to a bit of shakin’…

Record Collector – Club Column
Can taking a pee make the difference between underground and mainstream success? The once Crazy Penis, are now just plain old CRAZY P. A Night On Earth (Shiva *****) - the follow-up to last year’s acclaimed 24 Hour Psychedelic Freakout - shows there’s nothing flaccid about this wonderfully crafted act that again demonstrate why we’ve previously called them the most exciting band to emerge from the British dance scene since Massive Attack.
Another beautifully constructed soundscape of Balearic-kissed beats (Bumcop and Cruising), rolling dance grooves (Sun-Science) and dreamy chilled beats (Warm On The Inside) sound more delicious with each successive play. The single, Lady T, with abstract lyrics and acid-etched beats is implausibly relaxed, while the ‘80s feel of Music’s My Love (riding a choice sample ‘borrowed’ from Steve Drayton’s boogie tune Stop Playing With My Love) and Kicks grooving to Dannielle Moore’s lead once more aptly demonstrate the Nottingham combo’s sharp production savvy and musical flare.

"Sometimes records have the ability to drag you back to a place that even though you remember vividly deep in your subconscious, you can't quite remember how you got there, or how you got home. A Night on Earth takes you to that place. It is freely familiar and foreign all at once, bringing a funky disco-esque flava with progressive bass lines and synth rises. This truly is a memorable record and is easy to get into, over and over again. Offering refreshing and exciting ranges of tracks, Crazy P have certainly made a record to which you will get off your seasonally depressed ass and get down to a bit of shakin." Blowback
IDJ NOVEMBER ALBUM OF THE MONTH
"I have to admit that until this album landed on my desk last month, I’d more or less forgotten about Crazy Penis. While I rated both their 1999 debut album ‘A Nice Hot Bath With’ and 2002 follow-up ‘The Wicked Is Music’, I’d heard so little from them since that I didn’t even know whether they were still active...."
